Donation Drive to Aid Local Flooding Victims

January 13, 2023

This week, we witnessed major tragedies in communities across our county because of the storms. Planada, a small farming town east of Merced on Highway 140, is one of the hardest-hit areas, with flood waters several feet deep rushing into homes as residents fled.

After the evacuation order was lifted for Planada on Thursday, many residents returned to homes that were severely damaged and personal property that was destroyed. The community has been told not to drink the water due to containments.

To help the people of Planada who have been so dramatically affected, the UC Merced Police Department is conducting a drive to gather canned food and other necessary items.

No clothing or furniture is being accepted at this time, but the Police Department is looking for donations of:

  • Food, canned/non-perishable

  • Disposable plates and utensils

  • Bottled water

  • Cleaning supplies

  • Trash bags

  • Toiletries

  • Kids’ toys (new preferred)

Donations will be accepted each day at the police department on campus from Jan. 14-20, between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

For large donations, please call the UC Merced Police Department at 209-228-8273 in advance so arrangements can be made to accept the items.
